[Introduction]
The rising worldwide popularity of Linux is evident
in Japan with a rapidly increasing number of industries using Linux
mainly in PC servers. Major corporations and others are also actively
investing in Linux related industry. The major reason for the interest
in Linux is probably the fact that it is an open source operating
system, meaning that anyone is free to develop and release products
using it without any restrictions. The effects of the Linux boom
in the PC industry are being felt in the embedded technology industry
with a steady stream of new Linux products for embedding. Nevertheless,
embedded developers and commercial product manufacturers in Japan
are faced with the reality that the open source status that is Linux's
principle merit also presents problems in maintenance, support and
quality control. This consortium will work to solve these problems
and promote development of the richly rewarding culture associated
with Linux.
[Present Status of Linux]
In a short ten years, move than 10 million users
of Linux have appeared throughout the world. In Japan as well a
rapidly increasing number of industries are using Linux mainly in
PC servers. The background to this is that Linux is not the product
of any vender, but an open source operating system that anyone is
free to develop and release products using it without any restrictions.
The effects of the Linux boom in the PC industry are being felt
in the embedded technology industry with a steady stream of new
Linux products for embedding. Nevertheless, embedded developers
and commercial product manufacturers in Japan are faced with the
reality that the open source status that is Linux's principle merit
also presents problems in maintenance, support and quality control.
This consortium will work to solve these problems and promote development
of the richly rewarding culture associated with Linux.
